I talked to Marius Valdes on Monday. Marius taught Graphic Design at USC Upstate a few years ago and now resides in Columbia where he teaches at USC. We hosted an exhibit here at the Showroom a few years ago that featured his paintings. It was one of our most successful shows to date as far as purchases go, nearly every piece had a big red dot on it! That show consisted primarily of Marius’ barnyard portraits, cows, pigs, chickens. I see those bold, colorful paintings in so many homes now and even have a set of chickens in my own kitchen. Marius’ style is part comic, part pop and part folk. He is a master of marketing and creating art that is accessible to so many people.
In June, Marius will return to conquer Spartanburg once more. He’s working on a whole collection of work for the show including works on canvas, small framed pieces and 100 of his figures, small creatures that were hatched out of the Valdes brain. I got an email from Marius yesterday with a few photos of work in progress. Check out Marius with a table full of work. Be sure to stay tuned for more updates about the exhibit and in the meantime, take a look at his blog.
